It has been bitterly cold. Of course my version of bitter cold and other people’s versions of bitter cold are vastly different. I’m the one wearing a sweater when it’s 80 degrees outside. People frequently stare at me aghast and agog at my sweater wearing in the summer.
Spring brings all kinds of new things. It’s often called the season of renewal. We start planting gardens, some of us might pull out spring wardrobes and many do a spring clean. I can vividly remember trying to avoid spring cleaning when I was growing up. My mom would clean top to bottom and we all had assigned chores. I had to dust. From the giant china cabinet, to the dry sink (my question about why it was a dry sink was never answered) I figured out on my own when I was 11 and accidentally spilled water in it, to the delicate soap stone figurines she had collected when she was a teacher in Hay River, I was the the official dust get ridder over.
Spring also brings renewal in nature. New baby animals, buds on trees, new flowers, and the promise of fresh berries, tomatoes, cucumbers, asparagus, eggplant and beautiful gardens planted and cared for with love. I was very lucky to have a cottage growing up, and my favourite part of that cottage was to travel to the berry stand and pick up a giant flat of fresh strawberries. The cottage is gone now, lost to the annals of time, but I still make a trip to that berry stand every year to get a giant flat of strawberries and sit with my memories for a few minutes.
Spring is also an excellent time to read. The warmer weather invites us to sit outside in our chairs, perhaps wrapped in a lap blanket while listening to bird song. From Onyx Storm, to the newest Sophie Lark, to Brandon Sanderson, and Pam Jenoff, you can find the hottest new Spring read at Turns and Tales. We are always ready to give you recommendations too.
If board games are your thing, we have a huge library of games to choose from both for purchase and play. You can gather with friends, read in the comfy corner, study, or just sit with your thoughts if you wish. Our cafe is equipped with lots of treats and snacks and our staff is always ready to meet your needs. Hopefully this warm stretch of weather soon to happen will stick around. In the meantime, stay warm, and think Springy thoughts.
